Our trainer, Bill Asplin is a certified IGP helper and is trained in first aid and CPR. He uses NePoPo training methodologies.

NePoPo®

NePoPo® dog training is a sophisticated and highly effective training system that combines classical and operant conditioning techniques. Developed by renowned dog trainer Bart Bellon, NePoPo® stands for “Negative, Positive, Positive,” and the system is designed to create confident, motivated, and reliable dogs.

Here’s how the NePoPo® system works:

The Components of NePoPo®

Ne (Negative): This phase uses a low level of pressure (negative reinforcement) to guide the dog into performing the desired behavior. This is not about punishment, but rather teaching the dog that certain behaviors turn off mild discomfort or pressure, leading them to perform the correct action.

Po (Positive): Once the dog performs the correct behavior, the pressure is released, and the dog experiences relief (which acts as a reward). This helps reinforce the behavior, encouraging the dog to seek out the correct action in the future.

Po (Positive): The second “Po” stands for positive reinforcement, where the dog receives a high-value reward such as a treat, toy, or praise for completing the behavior correctly. This creates strong motivation for the dog to perform the task, associating it with enjoyable outcomes.

The Goal of NePoPo® Training

The primary goal of the NePoPo® system is to build a dog that works with enthusiasm, reliability, and precision. Unlike purely positive reinforcement methods, NePoPo® blends mild pressure with rewards to help dogs understand both what to do and what not to do. This makes the training more balanced and adaptable for different types of dogs, especially those that may need more guidance or clarity.

Balance and Clarity: NePoPo® uses a balanced approach, making sure the dog understands how to avoid incorrect behaviors while also experiencing the joy of performing correct ones.

Drive and Motivation: By using a combination of pressure release and rewards, NePoPo® helps build a dog’s drive and motivation, so they learn to work with energy and enthusiasm.

Independence and Reliability: NePoPo® trains dogs to perform behaviors not only because they’re commanded, but because they’ve learned to love working. It helps create dogs that are reliable in various situations and environments.
